HARD HAT DIVERS RED HAT

Have you ever wondered why the red hat is linked with diving? Well, if you are as old as me you probably think it is linked with the early films of Jacques Cousteau. It goes back way before that. When Siebe Gorman sold an helmet they put one red hat inside. It was such a prized possession that divers would try and break into the packaging to steal it. In-fact the red hat actually began life when diving itself started. At the time diving began nothing was known about decompression sickness so the divers would often get bent or die. The clever French decided for divers they would use convicts, that way if a diver died no one really cared. To make divers stand out the convicts were made to wear red hats.
